Newcastle United target Gerardo Arteaga has opened the door to a move to the Premier League, telling Marca that he would consider a move away from Belgian giants KRC Genk.

If you wanted to make a list of all the players linked with a move to St James’ Park October’s that Saudi Arabian takeover, well you’d probably need more paper than your local branch of Clinton Cards.

Arteaga is a new name in the frame, appearing with just four days of the window remaining.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out, considering that Arteaga has only emerged as a potential option very late in the month, that he is not Eddie Howe’s first-choice target.

A swashbuckling Mexico international, Newcastle expressed their interest in 23-year-old Arteaga after a series of alternative left-back targets went by the wayside (90Min).

Robin Gosen’s agent confirmed on Wednesday that the Atalanta flyer had chosen Serie A champions Inter Milan over a club hovering just three points of the bottom of the Premier League.

With all due respect to Newcastle, who can blame him, really?

Talks over a deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Mitchel Bakker are ongoing. But this feels like a deal that could go both ways.

Rogerio of Sassuolo is another option but Newcastle have walked away from the buccaneering Brazilian once already. Brighton, meanwhile, are standing firm in the pursuit of the versatile Dan Burn.

Is Gerardo Arteaga the answer to Newcastle’s left-back problem?

Arteaga, meanwhile, joined Genk from Liga MX outfit Santos Laguna for around £3.5 million in the summer of 2020.

Despite winning a Belgian Cup in his debut seaso, Arteaga is not against the idea of taking another step up the proverbial footballing ladder sooner rather than later.

“Thank God I’ve been doing well in this league,” he says.

“It’s a lower level league but a very competitive league. But obviously, personally, I always want the best.

“I would like to move on to another, even better, higher-level league. I still have a few seasons left on my contract here but, if I could leave earlier, I’d be delighted.”

Arteaga has ten caps for the Mexican national team.

And he’s been likened to Roberto Carlos – arguably the greatest left-back of the 21st century – due to his all-action style.
