Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a move for Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back Adam Webster, with his teammate Dan Burn also on the Magpies’ radar.

According to the Express, the Toon are keeping tabs on both defenders ahead of the final week of the transfer window. Newcastle are yet to sign a centre-back this January, a position many would agree should have been sorted out earlier in the month.

The Magpies have one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League this season, with the club still in the relegation zone. And after chasing Diego Carlos for most of the window, Newcastle have now turned to Webster.

The Brighton defender only joined the club two seasons ago for a reported fee of £20m according to the Guardian. However, Seagull supporters are huge fans of the former Bristol City defender.

As per the Mirror, Brighton fans jokingly compare the defender to Italian legend Paulo Maldini, with supporters calling Webster ‘Webdini’ on social media as well as the Amex Stadium.

Indeed, the defender has been in great form this season. And alongside Burn, it is no wonder why Newcastle are keen on Webster and his Brighton teammate in the final week of the January transfer window.

Webster could be another solid Newcastle addition this January

A towering presence for Brighton and £20m well spent, Webster has impressed since his move to the south coast in 2019, and for Newcastle, the defender could be a perfect fit for Eddie Howe’s squad in the second half of the season.

The Toon have already spent big this January in Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood. However, a centre-back arguably should have been signed first. And for Newcastle, Webster could be a perfect signing so late in the window to shore up the backline.
