Liverpool have reignited their interest to sign Schalke 04 defender Malick Thiaw, with AC Milan also chasing the German U-21 international.

According to Sky Italia via Football Italia, the Reds are in the race for the 20-year-old centre-back. However, Liverpool face competition from Milan for Thiaw, who are eager to sign a young defender this window.

Fabrizio Romano also reports that the Serie A side are pushing to bring in the defender this week, moreover, negotiations with Schalke won’t be easy given how important Thiaw is to the German club.

Labelled as ‘imposing’ by 90min, Thiaw has started every 2. Bundesliga game for Schalke this campaign as the Ruhr-based club aim to return to the German top-flight after last season’s relegation.

The defender came through the club’s academy and is now a key player for Schalke, and it is no wonder that the likes of Liverpool and Milan are eager to sign Thiaw this year, with Jurgen Klopp previously trying to sign the defender in 2020 as per Arena Napoli.

The 20-year-old has flourished under the stress of 2. Bundesliga football this campaign. And whilst Schalke’s situation has improved in recent months, the German side could be open to selling the defender if the right offer comes in.

Milan’s problems could give them edge to sign Thiaw over Liverpool

Liverpool’s defensive issues have done a complete 180 over the past 12 months with the Reds now well-stocked in the position, and with Milan eager to bolster their rankings at the back, the Italians could have an edge to sign Thiaw this month.

Indeed, Milan’s transfer strategy in recent years to sign young, talented players has pulled off big time, and Thiaw could be the latest success story if the Serie A giants can pip Liverpool to the German’s signature.
