Wout Weghorst wants to leave Bundesliga strugglers VFL Wolfsburg, sporting director Jorg Schmadtke tells BILD, in a potential boost to Premier League duo Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
The 6ft 6ins Dutchman is just eight goals short of replacing Edin Dzeko as the most prolific footballer in Wolfsburg’s top-flight history. Whether he breaks that record this season, however, remains to be seen.
According to BILD, the ambitious, always outspoken Weghorst is desperate to secure a move to the Premier League.
But even if he is to stay, there is no guarantee that Dzeko’s record will be broken.
After all, Weghorst isn’t exactly drowning in a sea of goalscoring chances these days.
The Wolves have lost their bite, losing nine of their last ten games in all competitions.
Weghorst hit 20 Bundesliga goals last term. He won’t come anywhere near to matching that tally this time around, albeit through no real fault of his own.
And the former AZ Alkmaar targetman would be forgiven for feeling rather bitter if his team’s dreadful form scuppers his hopes of a long-awaited move across the Channel.
Will Wout Weghorst ever move to the Premier League?
“There have been no inquiries for Wout (in the January transfer window),” Schmadtke says.
“It’s surprising that there is no offer for someone who regularly scores goals in the Bundesliga and has clearly announced publicly that he is willing to move.”

Kicker reported in December that Newcastle are keen on Weghorst.
The Magpies have since signed Chris Wood, another 6ft-something, penalty-box poacher in the Weghorst mould. Is Tyneside big enough for the both of them?
A more fitting move may be Spurs, a side in desperate need for attacking reinforcements.
Antonio Conte is never afraid to demand transfers in public. And he has been typically outspoken in his desire to bring in a player capable of easing the burden on Harry Kane’s shoulders.
Weghorst admitted in 2020 that Tottenham had shown a ‘serious’ interest in signing him.
With Spurs more reliant on Kane than ever – and with top target Dusan Vlahovic heading to Juventus – this may the ideal time to revisit Weghorst.
