Newcastle United are now stalling in the race to sign Atalanta wingback Robin Gosens, with Inter Milan leading the charge for the German international.

According to Fabrizio Romano via Twitter, the Magpies are in a losing position for the left-sided fullback. As per the Italian journalist, inter are now ‘leading the race over Newcastle’ for Gosens, who could leave Atalanta this month.

Newcastle have been chasing Gosens for most of January. Eddie Howe’s side are keen to strengthen in all areas of the pitch, and the Serie A defender would be an excellent fullback partner to Kieran Trippier, who was signed from Atletico Madrid.

However, Gosens now looks closer to joining Inter than Newcastle. As per Romano, the Nerazzurri are in advanced negotiations to sign the 27-year-old, and given the Milan side’s position in the Serie A table, they have a considerable advantage.

With Inter also in the UEFA Champions League and not lingering in the relegation zone, Simone Inzaghi’s side are clear favourites to sign Gosens, with a deal potentially all wrapped up by the end of this week.

As for Newcastle, the news of Inter taking the lead in the race for Gosens will be a blow for the Premier League side. The Toon have been chasing the German for most of January, and with under a week of the window left to go, a replacement target will be hard to find.

Inter-bound Gosens would have been perfect Newcastle

Wing-backs as good as Gosens are hard to find in this era of the game, and for Inter, they are close to signing one of the best in Europe in what will be a hammer blow for Newcastle and their aspirations for the remainder of the season.

Indeed, the news will allow Newcastle to focus on a centre-back and central midfielder. However, there’s no denying that Gosens would have been an excellent addition to Howe’s squad this January.
