Why did Meat Loaf call himself Meat Loaf?

Meat Loaf identified himself by the interesting moniker much before he rose to prominence.

He said on Oprah Winfrey’s Where Are They Now series in 2016 that his father told the hospital to put a “Meat” tag on his crib because his newborn “looked like nine-and-a-half pounds of ground chuck”.

Explaining how he got the second half of his name, he told Oprah that when he was in eighth grade, he stepped on his coach’s foot.

His coach immediately screamed: “Get off my foot, you hunk of meatloaf!” The name stuck with him for the rest of his life.

The rock star had multiple stories about his name

There’s more to the origin of the singer’s name.

He apparently shared a different story with PEOPLE in 1978, claims the outlet.

He said he was called Meat Loaf owing to his size growing up because he was never less than 185 pounds.

Meanwhile, when he appeared on Piers Morgan Live in 2011, he shared yet another version, saying his name’s origin traced back to a Levi’s commercial.

The ad said: “Poor fat Marvin can’t wear Levi’s.” and the musician changed his first name from Marvin to Michael right after that.

But, it wasn’t only that. Explaining the connection between Levi’s commercial and his unique name, the singer said he was six when the commercial came out and he was “so big” that he could “never wear blue jeans.”

“I was called Meat, but people would call me Marvin, and after that, nobody called me Marvin,” he added.
