Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Don Hutchinson has been chatting about the rumours linking Fabio Cannavaro with the Everton job.
The Italian has emerged as a genuine candidate to replace Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park. He’s apparently impressed in an interview, and it sounds as though he could well end up getting the job.
Cannavaro is one of the biggest names in Italian football history. He captained the national team to the World Cup in 2006, and he even won a Ballon d’Or.
However, despite his incredible playing career, Hutchinson can’t understand why he’s being linked with this type of job.
What’s been said about Cannavaro?
The pundit shared his view on the Italian and his links to Everton.
“What a story, I mean, I’m stunned to be honest., I’m not sure what CV he has to warrant a job like Everton. It’s another gamble from Farhad Moshiri. I can’t imagine it’s a Bill Kenwright pick. I heard rumours months ago that Bill Kenwright wanted Roberto Martinez back, but Moshiri put his foot down and insisted on Rafa, and that was always going to end in tears,” Hutchinson said.
“They have to make sure they get this one right, and I wouldn’t be in a hurry if I was Everton. Whatever they do they mustn’t rush this appointment. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Graham Potter has to be the number one choice in my opinion. Mourinho would be a gamble still. I’m stunned, I’ve seen the Cannavaro news and I thought ‘how?’ what is the criteria? How does he deserve a job like Everton? I’m not sure.”

Not that bad
Cannavaro may not have the CV of Carlo Ancelotti or Rafa Benitez, but there are worse options out there.
Don’t forget, some are calling for Duncan Ferguson, who has never managed a senior football team in his life, or Wayne Rooney, who has only been in management for a year, to get this job.
Cannavaro, on the other hand, has years of experience managing in China and Saudi Arabia, and while that’s not quite the Premier League, it’s still a decent standard.
Cannavaro could be brilliant if he comes in or he could be poor. There are quite simply no guarantees when you appoint any manager.
