Leeds are reportedly in talks to raid RedBull Salzburg for midfielder Brenden Aaronson this month – a player that spoke of his desire to move to the Premier League in 2020. He labelled a move to England as a “dream”.

Aaronson, 21, has enjoyed a brilliant 12 months at Salzburg since joining the club from Philadelphia Union in January 2021. Already playing 51 times, the 15-time USA star has had a hand in 22 goals from the middle of the park.

Scoring 10, he has created 12 and also scored five times at international level. An attacking midfielder, Aaronson can play deeper in the middle of the park as a six, too. Much like Mateusz Klich.

The Athletic say Aaronson was the subject of a £15million bif from Leeds – which has been rejected. Leeds remain in talks to sign him. His comments about a move to the Premier League in 2020 will prove intriguing.

“The Premier League is the dream league. It’s unbelievable and it keeps going upwards,” Aaronson told Sky Sports in 2020. “It’s a dream league, something I would like to be a part of for any team over there really.”

Aaronson on Premier League: Likely to be just one obstacle for Leeds

The USA star’s comments simply state that a move to Leeds would be something he would jump at. Even though, since those comments, Aaronson has improved – a move to Leeds would still be a step up for him.

Yes, bigger Premier League clubs are likely to have Aaronson on their radar. But in terms of style and fit, Aaronson is ideal. Stamina, energy, goals, assists, intelligence – all at 21. His comments show he would join Leeds.

So, the only obstacle is going to be agreeing a fee. If Leeds can match Leipzig’s valuation, not likely to be much more than the original bid, then they are getting themselves a proper player – and a proper talent.
