Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte has told Fabio Paratici to sign Weston McKennie from Juventus in the January transfer window, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The report in the Italian publication has reported that Spurs head coach Conte likes McKennie a lot and wants him in his team right now.

So, according to the report, the former Juventus and Inter Milan boss is pushing Tottenham Managing Director of football Paratici to try to get a transfer deal done in January.

Juventus are claimed to be open to a deal over the 23-year-old USA international midfielder and could listen to suitable offers.

Tottenham Hotspur should sign Weston McKennie on loan

In our view, Tottenham should sign McKennie on a loan deal from Juventus, not on a permanent contract.

Now, we understand that it may not be what could convince Juventus, but Tottenham could be successful if they are willing to pay a decent loan fee, are willing to cover McKennie’s wages and have an option to make it permanent at the end of the season.

The reason why we think a loan deal for the American is preferable to a permanent contract is because it is Conte who wants him and his contract at Tottenham ends in the summer of 2023.

Yes, there is an option to extend it, but given that it is a (relatively) short-term contract, the North London club should not heavily invest in McKennie in the middle of the season.

If McKennie does well during his loan spell, then, yes, Tottenham should look into signing him permanently.

The 23-year-old American has not exactly been great at Juventus, and, in our view, Tottenham should think of the long term as well as of short term when signing players in January.

McKennie has scored three goals in 13 Serie A starts and has made three starts in the Champions League so far this season.

The Juventus no. 14 made 18 starts and 16 substitute appearances in the league and made four starts and three substitute appearances in the Champions League last season.
