Reported Rangers target Danilho Doekhi has told De Volkskrant that he idolises Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk, and is intent on being the next version of the Dutch star. The Gers are eyeing a bargain £2million move.

Doekhi, 23, is out of contract at the end of the season and has been attracting interest from Rangers – with Gio van Bronckhorst a keen admirer of Dutch football. The Record claim that Vitesse want £2million this month.

Of course, Rangers could sign him on a pre-contract, Bosman deal – a move which would see Doekhi join in the summer on a free. But it would cost the club just £2million this month, and it might tempt van Bronckhorst.

Indeed, his latest comments will surely tempt Rangers and van Bronckhorst. He spoke of how he analyses £220,000-a-week (Spotrac) Liverpool ace van Dijk – and is desperate to emulate the defender.

“I watch his game a lot (Van Dijk). I try to analyse on how he handles certain situations. Players are never completely the same in terms of qualities, but I try to recognise things in his game that I could also do.”

Doekhi on van Dijk: Rangers must move, next version of Liverpool star

Doekhi has been sensational for Vitesse. Joining the club in the summer of 2018, he has clocked up 117 appearances in all competitions for Eredivisie side Vitesse – boasting pace, strength but comfort on the ball, too.

Rangers desperately need a defender. Leon Balogun and Connor Goldson are out of contract at the end of the season, Niko Katic remains out on loan. Doekhi, for £2million, would be a stunning bit of business.
