Alasdair Gold has reported that Cristian Romero is closing in on a return from injury, during a Q&A session on Football London’s website. Romero has played just twice under new Tottenham manager Antonio Conte.
Romero, 23, started both of Conte’s first two matches in charge – a 3-2 win over Vitesse Arnhem, and a 0-0 draw against Everton. The Argentina international is well-liked by Conte, and is expected to come back in.
But the ex-Juventus and Atalanta defender has spent the last couple of months on the sidelines with a long-term hamstring issue. Romero is believed to be Conte’s first choice on the right of a back three.
Ahead of two tough fixtures ahead of the January international break against Leicester and Chelsea, Gold has given an update on Romero – claiming he is close to a return. But a time frame has not been given.
“Romero should be back soon. He’s taking on more and more of a part in training sessions and now Conte just has to choose the right moment to bring him back,” Tottenham reporter Gold told Football London.
Gold on Romero: Tottenham defender’s return is a big boost
If Conte had all his players available to him, Romero starts on the right of a back three – with Eric Dier and Ben Davies accompanying him in front of Hugo Lloris. Of course, Conte wants additions – a left-sided defender, first.
Whether Romero can return to action before the international break, remains to be seen. Davinson Sanchez has been inconsistent in replacing him, starring against Watford but struggling against Chelsea.
However, bringing Romero back before the international break could see him travelling to Argentina for their January fixtures against Chile and Colombia – something Spurs would rather avoid.
