Newcastle United are reportedly close to securing their third signing of the January transfer window.
Robin Gosens is a new name attached to Newcastle in recent days.
TMW reported on Friday that the Magpies have offered him a £56,000 per week contract to come to St James’s Park.
Atalanta value the German winger at around £25 million.
And Sky Italia have this morning reported that the 27-year-old has agreed personal terms to join the Magpies.
Sky add that Newcastle are ‘serious’ about signing Gosens, despite carrying an injury.
Change of strategy
If this materialises, he will be the Premier League club’s third signing of the window.
So far, Saudi Public Investment Fund have already brought Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood to Tyneside.
However, this would represent a change of strategy by Newcastle, who have only signed proven Premier League players thus far.
With United battling for their Premier League lives, sitting 19th in the standings, Saudi PIF and Eddie Howe need quality footballers who know English football.
And considering Gosens is a German plying his trade in Italy, he doesn’t know the English game all that well.
He is, however, an attacking player and Howe could use another one of them, on the opposite flank as Allan Saint-Maximin.
Gosens has quite a lofty transfer fee, but he’s a very good player.
Last season, the former Vitesse attacker managed 11 goals in 32 Serie A outings which, for a winger, is a decent return.
During the 2019-20 campaign, he netted nine 34 league appearances – and provided eight assists.
With Newcastle struggling to score goals and create chances this season, this could be a fine addition.
