BTS’ latest webtoon ‘7Fates: Chakho’ has released its first episode and fans are loving the Urban Fantasy storytelling right from the beginning. The story also has its fair share of traditional elements like Chakhogapsa and Shaman. If you are wondering what ‘Chakho’ or ‘Shaman’ means, we have got you all covered.
Episode 1 of ‘7Fates Chakho’ is all about Zeha (Jungkook) starting his journey to know his past, how his parents passed away and how everything is linked to the Beom (Tiger) rock.
In the first installment of ‘7Fates Chakho,’ Zeha meets Haru (Jimin), the Mountain Deity who was protecting the earth from beom all this time.
‘Chakho’ meaning in BTS Webtoon
A number of readers have been curious to know the meaning of the word ‘Chakho’ from the BTS webtoon title ‘7Fates: Chakho.’
Here are two possible explanations.
As ‘7Fates: Chakho’ is based on the traditional stories of “Chakhogapsa,” aka the Beom (tiger) hunters of the Joseon Dynasty, the seven characters of the webtoon name themselves ‘Chakho’ as they are the ‘designated’ beom (tiger) hunters in the story.
A Netizen explained the historical context of using the word ‘Chakho’ or ‘Chakhogapsa’ by writing, “Although there are no tigers in the wild anymore in the Korean peninsula, back in the time it was super common. And tigers often attacked people in rural areas and killed them: the kings of the Joseon Dynasty took it seriously and formed special forces to hunt them.”
A second possible reason for choosing the word ‘Chakho’ can be found in RM’s explanation of ‘7Fates Chakho.’ RM says that ‘7Fates’ is all about how seven destinies are tied by their tragic fate and ‘Chakko/ Chakho’ in Korean can also mean shackles or chains.
So, 7Fates Chakho is all about how the seven characters once united will break free from the chain of their tragic fate or find out how their destinies are tied.
‘7Fates Chakho’: What does Shaman mean in Korean?
In Korean, ‘Shaman’ means “a priest or priestess who uses magic for the purpose of curing the sick, divining the hidden, and controlling events.”
‘Shamans’ can be found in traditional Korean tales and historical K-dramas.
Here, in ‘7Fates: Chakho’, Zeha’s (Jungkook) mother was a Shaman who possessed high powers. But, Zeha is half human and half beom, which means that Zeha may possibly carry not only the power of a beom but also a Shaman.
Haru as Mountain Deity: What it means
‘Haru’ (Jimin) is a mountain deity who has been guarding the earth from the harmful creatures of the other side. But, due to an unknown incident involving Zeha (Jungkook), the seal of the gate is broken and Haru will likely have human characteristics. Will he still possess the power of deity?
