Wesley Hoedt has been speaking to Het Nieuwsblad after hearing that Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants to bring him to Rangers.

What’s the story?

Well, the 27-year-old is believed to be a target for Rangers, although by the sounds of it, he has no interest in a move to Ibrox.

The centre-back – who made 41 Premier League appearances for Southampton – said: “Together with my agent, I laughed about that message in the English media.

“The sports manager of Southampton (Ross Wilson) is now in Glasgow, but he’s not going to get me, you know. Moreover, I’m doing well at Anderlecht. In time, I want to play Champions League here, and I’m close to the Netherlands.”

That will come as a shame to Van Bronckhorst, who could certainly do with another centre-back at the moment.

Rangers are currently without Leon Balogun and Filip Helander, so another option in that department wouldn’t go amiss.

Hoedt seemed like an exciting target.

So far this season, the 6-cap Netherlands international has four goals in 28 appearances.

Is Wesley Hoedt decision a blessing in disguise for Rangers?

During his time at Southampton, the towering centre-back had a few issues with Ralph Hasenhuttl.

As The Athletic detail, Hoedt was told he would be given a second chance by the Austrian, to which he replied: “What do you mean, second chance? I have never had a first among you.” (Nieuwsblad)

We’re not sure the Saints boss would’ve appreciated that.

He also said he regretted his decision to join Southampton, where he struggled significantly and also failed to impress on loan at Lazio.

Back in Italy, Hoedt was fined for filming a plane landing which broke local airport rules, and endured a horrorshow in a 3-2 defeat to Atalanta in the Coppa Italia at the end of January 2021.

The Dutchman made a mistake to gift Atalanta a 57th minute winner, before also giving away a penalty which was saved.

He later took to Instagram to apologise and was recalled by Simone Inzaghi for a clash with Inter Milan, only to give away another penalty and be hauled off at half-time.

In our view, Rangers may have dodged a bullet.
