John Heitinga has sent a heartfelt Tweet to new Everton signing Anwar El Ghazi, after the Dutch winger completed a move on loan from Aston Villa. Heitinga and El Ghazi played together at Ajax, during 2015-16.

El Ghazi, 26, has earned iconic status during his time at Aston Villa – scoring crucial goals in the club’s promotion to the Premier League. During his time in England’s top tier, he has netted 15 times in 71 Premier League games.

Somewhat underrated by many, the Netherlands international has gone north to Merseyside in a move opposite to that of Lucas Digne. The France international has moved to Villa, on a permanent deal worth £23million.

El Ghazi has gone the other way – prompting a mixed reaction from Villa fans. The Echo report there is a permanent clause included in the deal, but the price of that is unclear. Heitinga had a nine-word message for El Ghazi.

Heitinga to El Ghazi: Will Villa loanee shine at Everton?

It is certainly an intriguing move. El Ghazi has taken to Premier League life when given the chance – but the signings of Leon Bailey, Bertrand Traore, Emi Buendia and Philippe Coutinho have pushed him down the rankings.

Everton have numerous options on the flanks. Anthony Gordon is improving, Richarlison is first on the team sheet, and both Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have sparkled since being signed.

So, it will be interesting to see if Rafa Benitez uses him as a winger. Of course, he can play as a 10, or even as a striker if needs be. But he will add a bit of aggression, a bit of tenacity in the final third.
