Starring Ricky Gervais, the black comedy-drama follows Tony, a writer for the local newspaper who tries to navigate his life after the death of his wife Emma.

After slowly beginning to acknowledge that life must go on, another loss in season 2 threatens to bring Tony’s world crashing back down again.

Is the show based on a true story?

No, the actual show is not based on the personal life and experiences of Ricky Gervais.

But during an interview on the podcast Series Linked, the actor explained that every role he had played in his career has been “semi-autobiographical”.

He admitted that his After Life character Tony is the “closest” to him.

Meanwhile, parts of the series have been inspired by real-life stories.

In episode 1 from After Life’s first season, Tony and photographer Lenny visit an 80-year-old man who receives five identical birthday cards.

And this is a true story. A man called Brian from Exeter received the same 80th birthday card from different family members back in 2013.
