David Culley has been fired by the Houston Texans after a disappointing NFL regular season, but how much was left on his contract? What is the amount the franchise will still have to pay Culley?

Long-time NFL assistant coach David Culley finally moved up to the coach position for the 2021 season with the Houston Texans.

The 66-year-old signed a deal to take over the struggling franchise, but after a 4-13 season, Culley has been relieved of his duties after just one season.

He signed a five-year deal with the Texans to leave the Baltimore Ravens ahead of the 2021 season.

However, after the disappointing regular season, Culley was let go but his contract still needs to be paid up.

David Culley contract revealed

For 2021, Culley’s base salary was $5 million.

Despite firing him, the Texans will still pay out the next three years of David Culley’s contract.

These three years are worth about $17 million, as per NFL Network reporter, Tom Pelissero.

It means in total that, despite his contract being ripped up, David Culley will earn $22 million in total for just a single year’s work at the Texans.

Culley’s firing means that there is now only one black head coach in the NFL.

Brian Flores was fired on Monday from the Miami Dolphins, meaning Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers is the only black HC in the league – as of 10:00am ET on Friday, 14th January.

How did it compare to others?

David Culley’s contract with the Texans did not place him in the top 10 of NFL coaches in terms of salary in 2021.

In 10th place was Bruce Arians of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – with $8 million – about $3 million more than Culley.

The top of the list in 2021 was, unsurprisingly, Bill Belichick.

The New England Patriots HC earned $12 million for his work, just ahead of Pete Carroll ($11 million) and Jon Gruden ($10 million) – although Gruden was fired mid-way through the regular season.
