Ajax have confirmed that they have sold David Neres to Shakhtar Donetsk. The Brazilian attacker has joined the Ukranian champions for a fee in the region of £13.5million – despite links to both Everton and Newcastle United.
Neres, 24, has decided to leave Ajax after falling down the pecking order at Ajax. Under Erik Ten Hag, the seven-time Brazil international has only scored four goals in 22 games in 21-22 – 16 of which came from the bench.
A January move was likely for Neres and as so many Brazilians do, he has moved to Ukraine to shine for the current league leaders. That is, despite interest from the Premier League – namely, Everton and Newcastle.
Jeunes Footeux reported earlier this month that Everton and Newcastle were taking a look at Neres – while Lyon were also keen. Now, he has moved to Ukraine – Ajax confirming the deal could reach a total of £13.5million.
Everton and Newcastle miss out: Neres a bargain at £13.5million
It is not even a definite that the price tag will reach £13.5million. It is £10million up front, with add-ons that could take the deal to the £13.5million figure. But they are variables, not definites.
Everton have just brought in Anwar El Ghazi on loan from Aston Villa, after signing Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend – as well as boasting Richarlison and Anthony Gordon. But he improves Newcastle.
Ryan Fraser has been used from the right, as has Miguel Almiron – but surely Neres is an improvement? The Toon should rue not pursuing their initial interest in the ex-Ajax star.
