Episode 3 of The Book of Boba Fett introduced audiences to a nameless biker/speed racer gang of thieving youths – or, depending on how you look at it, Robin Hood figures – whose colourful aesthetic, Twitter has noticed, is reminiscent of the Power Rangers.

Not only do they each ride brightly coloured – green, red, blue and yellow – transports, but they’re also each equipped with a unique weapon.

The apparent similarities between Boba Fett’s newest group of recruits and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers have made headlines, and amused Twitter greatly since the episode aired on January 12.

Book of Boba Fett episode 3 spawns Power Rangers parody

The people over at Geeks + Gamers were quick to pick up on the Power Rangers aesthetic of the street gang in episode 3 of The Book of Boba Fett.

“Look at this. How is this Star Wars?” laments streamer Jeremy Griggs. “The people involved with this process know nothing about Star Wars.”

Fans reacted in kind – at least, those commenting on Griggs’ video. One wrote that they wanted to “erase that chase scene from my mind”; others described the characters are “cartoonish”; “the Quadrophenia Power Rangers were definitely a low point”, concluded another.

One YouTuber took the idea and ran with it, splicing together clips from The Book of Boba Fett and actual scenes from a Power Rangers episode, and set it all to the theme song – “Go, go, Power Rangers!”

How have audiences reacted to the apparent reference on social media?

While it may or may not be a deliberate reference to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the colourful aesthetic of Boba Fett’s biker gang is doing the rounds on Twitter.

A popular opinion is that they’re just not “Star Warsy” enough. But, one Twitter user points out, in a universe of “flying speeders, laser swords, laser rifles and insane tech”, a gang of droid enhanced humans aren’t too out of place.

Another reckons the producers are actually referencing 1960s mod culture, hence the Quadrophenia comment above – “not Power Rangers”.

How similar actually are Boba Fett’s newest recruits to Power Rangers?

In the series premiere of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, writes CBR, galactic wizard Zordon of Eltar famously requests that Alpha find “teenagers with attitude”.

Meanwhile, Lortha Peel, in episode 3 of The Book of Boba Fett, refers to Drash and her gang of misfits as “urchins” and “a street gang of insolent youths”. So, not far off “teenagers with attitude”.

While their cybernetic enhancements distinguish them from their Mighty Morphin counterparts, the fact that each one of them has their own weapon contributes to the likeness.

And, most obviously, the gang’s colour scheme aligns closely with that of the Power Rangers. Their bright suits and speeders stand out against the beige backdrop of Mos Espa. Audiences will just have to wait to see if Drash and her fellow gang members’ backstories match those of the Rangers.
