Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has been picking his Team of the Year for 2021, and he’s found a place for reported Tottenham target Antonio Rudiger.

The German centre-back was, quite simply, brilliant in 2021. The defender was transformed under Thomas Tuchel and he played a vital role in the Blues’ triumphant Champions League campaign.

Rio Ferdinand, of course, knows a thing or two about being a world-class centre-back, and he picked the Chelsea ace as the best defender of 2021.

What’s Ferdinand said about Rudiger?

The Manchester United legend was full of praise for the Tottenham target.

“Centre-back, Rudiger. Since Thomas Tuchel has come in he’s been the best defender around. He’s aggressive, he dominates, he demands from others. The crowd feeds off of the way he players. All-round I think he’s been tremendous. He’s one hell of a player, and whoever gets him for the next couple of years have got a great, solid player,” Ferdinand said.

Spot on

Ferdinand is absolutely right about Rudiger, whoever gets him this summer is getting a fantastic player.

Of course, there’s every chance that he’ll stay at Chelsea, but there are signs pointing towards a potential exit on a Bosman.

Tottenham will want to be at the front of the queue if Rudiger is available on a free transfer this summer, but unfortunately for Spurs, they’ll face some fierce competition.

Indeed, PSG and Real Madrid are both also said to be interested, so Spurs will have to put forward a very alluring proposal if they want to land Rudiger.
