Antonio Conte has shared that Cristian Romero is ‘very close’ to returning to action for Tottenham, as he told his pre-match press conference.

The Spurs boss added that Romero played a ‘little part’ in training on Tuesday, as he spoke about how other players have ‘improved’ in the absence of the club’s summer signing.

Romero last featured in a Premier League game against Everton in November and his return to the club’s backline is needed.

In the player’s absence, Eric Dier has led the charge from the back, with the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies playing in a back three alongside the Englishman.

It will be interesting if it’s Davies who makes way for Romero when he is able to return back to the pitch.

Either way, Conte had some good news about Romero following his confirmation that Heung-Min Son won’t return until ‘after the international break because of a muscle injury.

“We are talking about another player that is very close to coming back,” said Conte. “Today (Tuesday), Cristian had a little part of a training session with us.

“He’s very close. He is very close to coming back. We are talking about another important player for us. We lost him for almost two months and I think we face this situation in the best possible way.

“Cristian is, for sure, an important player for us. Despite this, the players that played and they showed to be good and they improved.”

Conte wouldn’t have seen much of Romero and the Italian is already dubbing the centre-back as an ‘important’ player.

That probably showcases the talent the Argentina international has in his boots, but he hasn’t been able to showcase it because of injuries.

Romero has only played seven Premier League games since Spurs paid big money for his talents in the summer.

But the supporters will be hoping all of that is behind him and he can now surge towards pushing the north London club towards Champions League football during the second half of the campaign.
