Rangers striker Jermain Defoe is set to leave Ibrox as Giovanni van Bronckhorst surprisingly recalls Cedric Itten to Glasgow.
That’s according to the Glasgow Times, who claim that Defoe is heading out of Rangers this month.
It’s claimed that Defoe has seen reduced coaching responsibilities since Van Bronckhorst brought Roy Makaay to Rangers.
With playing time on the pitch also reduced, Rangers have decided to let Defoe leave the club.
It’s currently unclear whether Defoe will be moved on to another club or simply have his contract paid up.
Defoe’s current contract expires at the end of the season, meaning it wouldn’t cost Rangers that much to pay up the remainder of his deal.
Defoe was a favourite of Steven Gerrard having played together for England then reunited at Rangers.
Yet with Gerrard now at Aston Villa, Defoe looks set to leave Rangers.
Since arriving in January 2019, Defoe has bagged 32 goals in 74 games – not a bad record despite his age.

Defoe heading out of Rangers comes just as Van Bronckhorst decides to bring striker Itten back to Rangers.
Loaned out to Greuther Furth this season, Itten has now been brought back to Rangers after two goals in 12 appearances.
The Swiss striker may have shown something that Van Bronckhorst likes, as he can’t play for another team this season.
That means Itten is being brought back to feature for Rangers, offering the 25-year-old another chance at Ibrox.
