Newcastle United have reportedly missed out on signing Marcelo Brozovic, who is set to pen a new contract with Inter Milan despite the Toon offering a higher wage package.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the reigning Serie A champions have reached a breakthrough with the Croatian international. Inter have been fighting for weeks for Brozovic to sign a new contract with the club.
And now, the 29-year-old is set to renew with the Italian giants. Yet as per the report, Newcastle’s Public Investment fund owners (PIF) offered a better financial offer for Brozovic valued at around £128,000-a-week.
With the Mirror reporting that Kieran Trippier has recently become Newcastle’s all-time highest earner at £100,000-a-week, this offer Brozovic would have created more history for Newcastle.
Indeed, the midfielder would have been an exceptional addition this window. However, Brozovic has opted to sign a new contract with Inter following a historic season with the club.
Moreover, with Inter currently top of the Serie A table, there’s a strong chance that the Nerazzurri will retain the Scudetto, with Brozovic again playing an important role in the midfield.
Inter contract for Brozovic shows Newcastle have a lot of work to do

A title-winning midfielder renewing with his current club over a move to a 19th-place club is hardly surprising. Yet with Newcastle reportedly offering a higher wage package than Inter, it paints a picture of how far the Toon have to go to reach the top.
The Magpies have made a good first move in Trippier. Yet there is still much more work to be done before Newcastle can head into a transfer for a player like Brozovic with the confidence they will sign him.
