Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Twitter that West Ham United are also interested in signing Stade Reims striker Hugo Ekitike. That is, after reports claimed Newcastle were in ‘advanced talks’ to strike a £30million deal.

Ekitike, 19, has been in stunning form for Ligue 1 side Reims of late. Clocking up 19 of his 20 senior outings for the French club this season, he has scored eight goals and laid on three assists – all in the league.

That form, unsurprisingly, has drawn interest from Premier League clubs. Newcastle are desperately in need of a striker, ahead of this weekend’s relegation six-pointer against Watford. Callum Wilson remains injured.

90Min say Newcastle are closing in on a move for the France Under-21 star – but now, Romano delivers an update. He has poured cold water on just how close Newcastle are, claiming West Ham also want Ekitike.

Why Ekitike is the perfect signing for both West Ham, and Newcastle

Much like the Harry Kane complex at Tottenham, West Ham and Newcastle both have brilliant striker options. Wilson is easily first choice and other than Allan Saint-Maximin – he is probably Eddie Howe’s best player.

At West Ham, Michail Antonio is crucial to the identity David Moyes has put in place at the London Stadium. So, replacing either striker is an uphill task and if they do, then they make one of their best players unhappy.

Both clubs need a back-up striker who is happy to sit on the bench, but more than capable of shining when given the chance. A player that is young, hungry but also showing good form. Ekitike is the prime example.

An exciting player, the Mail claim he has been ‘likened’ to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.
