Newcastle United are interested in signing Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is on loan at Crystal Palace at the moment, according to RMC Sport.

RMC Sport have reported that Newcastle have expressed an interest in signing Mateta, who is on loan at Palace from Mainz.

The 24-year-old French striker moved to the Eagles on loan from Mainz in the summer of 2021.

Swiss club Basel have asked about signing Mateta on loan in the January transfer window, according to RMC Sport.

The report has claimed that Mainz want Palace to trigger their option to sign Mateta on a permanent deal.

Palace do not want to do that now.

Newcastle should not sign Jean-Philippe Mateta

In our view, Newcastle should not sign Mateta in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old is not having the best of times at Palace, and it is really hard to see the striker make an immediate impact at Newcastle, who are in real danger of getting relegated to the Championship.

Mateta has made two starts and three substitute appearances in the Premier League for Palace so far this season.

The Palace no.14 has scored one goal in those games.

In our view, Newcastle should look at other and better strikers to enhance their chances of scoring more goals in the second half of the season.

Mateta is not the answer.
