George Clooney has returned to helm The Tender Bar on Amazon Prime Video, and up ahead, we explore the family of journalist, J.R. Moehringer and reveal who the writer’s wife is.
With a screenplay by William Monahan (The Departed) and starring Tye Sheridan, Ben Affleck, Lily Rabe, and more, The Tender Bar is an adaptation of the 2005 memoir of American novelist and journalist, J.R. Moehringer.
The film follows Moehringer (Sheridan) as he searches for a father figure after his parents took a step back from his life. Moehringer finds comfort in his uncle, Charlie (Affleck), and the patrons at his frequented bar.
Who is J.R. Moehringer’s wife?
J.R. Moehringer is currently married to book editor, Shannon Welch, and the couple reportedly lives in the Bay Area of San Francisco with their two children.
Having worked as a senior editor on Scribner, Welch previously edited actor Bryan Cranston’s memoir, A Life in Parts, which was published in 2016.
Welch also worked as an executive editor at Rodale and published a collection of nonfiction titles, including Jacqueline Novogratz’s memoir, The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World.
Who were the journalist’s mother and father?
Moehringer was raised by single mother, Dorothy Moehringer, in Manhasset, New York during the late 60s, and his father, Johnny Michaels, was a radio DJ who left the family early on.
As shown in Clooney’s film, Moehringer’s 20s were frequently spent at his Uncle’s bar, Dickens – a place he wrote about regularly in his memoir.
In a 2012 interview with NPR, Moehringer spoke about how he came to frequent the bar:
“…pretty early on, my mother kind of handed me off to my uncle and these guys from the bar, asked them to, you know, take me to the beach and to the ballgame. She knew that I needed some kind of male influence. She trusted my Uncle Charlie more than she – might have more than she should have, maybe.”
“So from a very early age, I was spending, you know, a good bit of time around these guys. I was never sitting at the bar with a scotch in front of me. It wasn’t that strange. But – and in fact, these guys were pretty careful, conscientious babysitters until the time that I was of legal age.”
Where was The Tender Bar filmed?
The Tender Bar was primarily filmed in and around the American state of Massachusetts.
The film is set in Long Island, New York during the 1970s, however, the production moved to Massachusetts – particularly the east coast.
The Greater Boston area and Worcester County were two major filming locations used frequently.
Additionally, the South Shore Plaza, located in the Norfolk County city of Braintree, was visited for filming, as well as the coastal town of Ipswich.
