Ian Wright has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur need an upgrade on Emerson Royal – despite Fabio Paratici only signing the player as recently as August.

The Brazilian flier joined Tottenham in a £30 million transfer from Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

But it has been a relatively underwhelming first six months for the right-back at the Lilywhites, you have to admit.

On some occasions Emerson looks like he fits perfectly into Antonio Conte’s wing-back system at Spurs but, during alternative outings, he appears very much a lost cause.

The 22-year-old didn’t offer much in Tottenham’s League Cup defeat at Chelsea in midweek, but Wright has said that he was ‘so poor’ in the dramatic victory over Watford last Saturday.

The Arsenal legend also suggested that those on the white half of the North London divide already need an upgrade on the South American.

He told Optus Sport: “Emerson Royal, it’s almost as if Watford said ‘let him have it’. His delivery was so poor. It literally just negated Tottenham. They paid £30 million already. Now they’re probably going to need to get a right wing-back.”

Will Tottenham purchase an upgrade?

Well, it’s extremely possible.

It’s plausible because it’s also very plausible Matt Docherty will be leaving the Lilywhites during the winter period, having struggled under the Italian manager.

And with Emerson being erratic, Tottenham would be insane to resume the rest of the campaign with the Brazilian and Japhet Tanganga as their only right-back options.
