The Mail claim Everton’s offer to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff was worth just £1million. The Englishman is out of contract in June and Rafa Benitez is an admirer, having worked with him at Newcastle.
Longstaff, 24, has only made three Premier League appearances since the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager. Two of those have come from the bench, but his last outing was a start against Manchester United, getting an assist.
There are hopes that Longstaff could be a player that Howe can transform, as he has done with the likes of Ryan Fraser and Joelinton. But his contract situation remains an issue, and it could force Newcastle into a January sale.
The Chronicle claims Newcastle are still keen on keeping Longstaff – and that Longstaff wants to sign a new deal with talks underway. The Mail state that Everton are keen – but their £1million bid has been rejected.
Everton boss Benitez once said of Longstaff in 2019, as per the Guardian, that “He’s a player who can be consistent.”
Longstaff bid: £1m Everton bid far below Newcastle star’s valuation
Although Longstaff is out of contract, the midfielder is worth so much more than just £1million. At least, he is to Newcastle. A Toon academy player, born and bred in Newcastle, he is also a homegrown part of the squad.
While he might not be worth an enormous amount right now, Longstaff is certainly worth more than £1million. The Toon would be best advised to hand the midfielder a new contract – and secure his future.
Not only because, it would prevent bids like Everton’s in the future. If offers were to come in for Longstaff, it would represent his true value. The Toon cannot let him go to Everton, at least, for the bargain fee of £1million.
