According to The Athletic, Newcastle have seen a bid rejected by Sevilla for Diego Carlos, as Eddie Howe looks to keep the Magpies in the Premier League.
What’s the story?
Well, The Athletic believe Howe wants to bring at least one new centre-back to Newcastle this month, ideally two.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that a €35m (£29m) bid for Sven Botman had been rejected by Lille, and it seems Newcastle have now moved on to Diego Carlos.
The Athletic state that talks between Sevilla and the Magpies are continuing, and Newcastle could still make an improved offer.
It’s no surprise to see Newcastle throw their newfound riches at the Brazilian, as his performances in Spain have been exceptional.
Diego Carlos – who Sevilla paid €15m (£13m) for – has attracted interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool thanks to his fine displays.
Diego Carlos would be a superb signing for Newcastle

In our view, Newcastle should definitely make an improved offer for the 28-year-old, as he can be a difference maker at the back.
The imposing South American is a rapid defender, as well as a towering presence – if we were to make a comparison, we’d liken his physical attributes to those of Virgil van Dijk.
Interestingly, The Athletic believe Howe wants one commanding centre-back, as well as one who is comfortable in possession.

Diego Carlos arguably possesses both of those traits, so you can see why the Magpies have launched a bid for the Sevilla No.20.
With talks continuing between the two sides, make sure to keep an eye on this saga.
