Tony Gallacher has posted on Instagram after the defender completed a permanent move from Liverpool to Scottish side St. Johnstone. The left-back has penned a contract at the top-tier side until the summer of 2024.

Gallacher, 22, managed just one senior appearance for Liverpool during his time at Anfield – the 5-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup in 2019. Instead, he was a regular in the club’s Under-23 side, playing 49 times.

This season, the six-time Scotland Under-19 international has played nine times for Liverpool’s Under-23 side. He even captained the second string against Port Vale in the EFL Trophy. But now, he has departed.

He joins a St. Johnstone side in the midst of a relegation battle – one the Saints are losing. They sit rock bottom, two points behind 11th-placed Dundee. Gallacher posted on Instagram after completing his exit.

Gallacher posts on Instagram after Liverpool exit – a good move?

Gallacher needed to leave Liverpool. At 22, there was no chance he was going to break into the senior side under Jurgen Klopp on a regular basis. Andy Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas remain first and second choice.

Neco Williams can do a job on the left of the defence, while James Milner can always fill in at left-back. So, the need for Gallacher was zero. For the good of his career, he needs to be playing senior football.

He is certainly good enough for St. Johnstone. Playing in the Scottish Premiership can always be a good trampoline move and if he can help the Saints avoid the drop, he has a chance of a bigger move in a year or two.
