Newcastle are reportedly leading Everton and Leicester in the race to sign Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos. A player, that Michael Owen claimed can do “almost every job” after scoring in the Europa League in 2019.
Morelos, 25, has been a sensation for Rangers. Joining the club in the summer of 2017 from Helsinki, he has gone on to score 107 goals in 211 games for the Glasgow side. He has been regularly linked with a move.
Now in the final 18 months of his Rangers contract, those links are re-emerging. CBS Sports claim that Newcastle are leading Everton and Leicester in the race to get Morelos – with his price tag at £20million.
His form has massively improved, since Rangers replaced Steven Gerrard with Gio van Bronckhorst – scoring six and creating two in eight games. In 2019, ex-Toon man Owen praised Morelos, after a goal against Porto.
“He’s that type, isn’t he? He’s the modern centre forward, a strong lad that can almost do every job,” Owen told BT Sport in 2019 – as per The Sun. “He can score goals, hold the ball up and run the channels. Top class.”
Owen verdict has got to tempt Newcastle, Everton, not Leicester
Leicester already have numerous options up top. Jamie Vardy is showing no signs of slowing down, while Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka are excellent replacements. Ayoze Perez and Harvey Barnes can do a job.
But Newcastle and Everton need strikers. The Toon more so, with Callum Wilson injured. Dom Calvert-Lewin has returned from Everton, but Salomon Rondon is his cover and has struggled since joining the club.
A move for Morelos is imperative for Newcastle, and would be a good signing for Everton. Owen’s verdict has got to convince the Toon’s new owners with the January window now in full swing.
