Is The Lost Daughter based on a true story?

The Lost Daughter is partially based on real-life events.

The Netflix film is first and foremost an adaptation of the Italian novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante.

It is unknown whether the book is based on a true story or not, however, it has been reported that director, Gyllenhall, implemented her own experiences as a mother into the narrative – meaning some of the scenes are based on true events.

The film adaptation takes a notable step away from the source material, including the film being set in Greece instead of Italy as well as some changes to scene locations and dialogue.

La figlia oscura by Elena Ferrante

La figlia oscura was written by an Italian author under the pseudonym of Elena Ferrante.

Titled one of the most influential people in 2016 by Time, Ferrante is most notably known for their four-part book series, Neapolitan Novels.

La figlia oscura was first published in 2006, printed in the author’s native language, and it received an English translation, The Lost Daughter, in 2008.
