Liverpool supporters on Twitter have noticed an officiating change by the Premier League ahead of this evening’s visit to Chelsea.

Jurgen Klopp’s side visit Stamford Bridge in the knowledge that a victory is needed to keep alive their title hopes.

Manchester City are 12 points clear of Liverpool but, despite the Reds boasting two games in hand, anything but a win at Chelsea may not be enough.

Paul Tierney was originally expected to take on VAR duties for this clash in West London.

Following a 2-2 draw with Tottenham in December, Klopp criticised Tierney – who was referee on the day – for his performance.

The Liverpool boss also accused the official of having a ‘problem‘ with him.

Here’s how some fans of the Anfield club reacted to Tierney being replaced with Darren England today.

Reason

It remains to be seen why Tierney was been pulled off his obligation for this evening.

However, with covid rampant in the United Kingdom right now, it’s possible that the return of a positive test could be a reason.

It seems unlikely that the absence is related to clashing with the Liverpool manager in North London last month.

But Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers was also critical of Tierney when he was the VAR official for their defeat at Manchester City.

Rodgers even referenced Tierney’s performance against Spurs in some post-match comments.

The game at Stamford Bridge is scheduled to kick off at 4.30 UK time, but Klopp, who himself has the coronavirus, will not be present.

Instead, Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders will be the main man on the touchline and for post-match media duties.
