Solo Leveling topped the 2021 ‘Manga We Want to see Animated’ poll, but fresh rumours of an anime series have been encouraged by the release of a new OST.

2021 has been nothing short of exceptional for fans of anime, manga and Webtoons.

Various manga series like Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family and Tokyo Revengers have become modern icons. Whilst the likes of My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer have dominated the anime world.

However, there is one person who is missing from the anime world, Jin-Woo. The protagonist from the hit web novel ‘Solo Leveling’ is yet to make his anime debut, but will he ever get a chance to appear in a TV series and if so, when could fans see an anime adaptation?

Rumours of a Solo Leveling anime spread online…

At the time of writing, no production company has publicly confirmed that an anime adaptation of Solo Leveling is being planned. However, social media has been flooded with rumours and theories about a potential Solo Leveling production.

This was because the official DNC Webtoon Twitter page recently shared a teaser for an upcoming OST (Original Sound Track), see below.

Captioned “Solo Leveling x THE BOYZ’ the new song will release in February 2022 and has fuelled speculation that this will be part of a larger promotional campaign for an anime.

Whilst an official confirmation of a television production remains unannounced, it’s surely only a matter of time before Jin-Woo hits our TV screens.

The most obvious reason for our optimism is quite an obvious one, popularity. Solo Leveling is arguably the most popular web novel in the world right now and consistently trends on social media with every new chapter.

In fact, Solo Leveling is the most requested anime adaption out there; topping AnimeJapan’s ‘Manga We Want to See Animated’ poll earlier this year and receiving over 212,000 signatures on a Change petition.

The large, dedicated core fanbase that Solo Leveling has cultivated could serve as an excellent platform for an anime adaption to start from. This could work in a very similar way to that of Chainsaw Man, another unique series with a large core fanbase that has just had its anime adaptation revealed.

Issues with animating Solo Leveling…

Whilst an anime would undoubtedly be a global success, there may be a slight caveat with adapting the Solo Leveling series; specifically, regarding Japanese production studios.

As YouTuber ‘Yiman’ pointed out in a popular video, Japanese society is not necessarily depicted in a favourable manner in certain arcs of Solo Leveling.

He suggests that this could mean Japanese animation studios may not want to adapt the series, unless they were willing to change specific aspects of the story.

One potential solution would be to have either a South Korean or American animation studio produce the series such as Studio Mir, or even streaming platforms such as Crunchyroll and Funimation making it an original production.

Although, considering the incredible artwork in Solo Leveling and seeing the outstanding visuals from other anime, in an ideal world the series would be adapted by either MAPPA (Jujutsu Kaisen) or Ufotable (Demon Slayer).

When could the Solo Leveling anime release?

Unfortunately, predicting a potential release date for a Solo Leveling anime adaptation remains dependent on several factors; when production is announced, the number of episodes and the animation studio.

The announcement of a Solo Leveling anime could come at any point, but anime adaptations typically take between 7 and 13 months to premiere after an official reveal.

Then we have the number of episodes; if Solo Leveling season 1 consisted of 12-15 episodes, then it would air one slate earlier than if it consisted of 24-25 episodes – which would itself likely utilise a split-cour production.

Finally, we have the animation studios. This may be a fairly obvious statement but the bigger the studio, the more resources they have at their disposal to speed up production.

Overall, if an anime adaptation for Solo Leveling is announced in the next few months, as the rumours suggest, fans can expect it to premiere in Winter 2022. However, if production on a television series is not confirmed in late-2022, season 1 may not debut until at least Summer 2023.

This article will be updated if any new information regarding a potential Solo Leveling anime adaptation is revealed.
