Newcastle are reportedly keeping tabs on Middlesbrough star Marcus Tavernier, with Leeds United also keen on the 22-year-old youngster.
According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are interested in the England youth international. Tavernier is one of the most exciting names in the Championship, with the midfielder attracting Premier League interest in the past 12 months.
As reported by TeamTalk, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have an interest in the prospect, and Tavernier will likely be at the centre of interest from both Leeds and Newcastle in the January window.
Whilst Tavernier’s goal involvements have been low this season (1G/1A), the youngster has remained a regular player for Boro this season under both Neil Warnock and Chris Wilder.
Since the arrival of the former Sheffield United manager, Tavernier’s game has been switched from the wing to central midfield, which seems to have been a masterstroke of a decision from Wilder, with Middlesbrough unbeaten since the change.
Moreover, with Warnock once comparing the youngster to Chelsea and England star Mason Mount, it makes sense why Newcastle are now keen on Tavernier given their problems in midfield.
Tavernier could be ideal signing for Newcastle this January

With Newcastle fighting a relegation battle, it would seemingly make sense to go for the biggest names to increase their chances of survival. However, going for players such as Tavernier could be a smart move for Eddie Howe.
With relegation a real threat, signing exciting talents from the Championship will not only help Newcastle in the second half of the Premier League season, but also give the club reassurance if they do go down that they have players who can thrive in the division.
