According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa are now trying to sign Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico, as Steven Gerrard looks to bolster his squad.

What’s the story?

Well, Aston Villa have made an approach for the 29-year-old, according to the reliable Italian journalist.

Romano believes talks are yet to officially open with Ajax, and at this stage, the Villans have only gone as far as approaching the Dutch giants.

It is also said that Chelsea are monitoring the 36-cap Argentina international’s situation.

The Blues are in need of a new left-back after Ben Chilwell was ruled out for the rest of the season, with Tagliafico an option for Thomas Tuchel.

Romano adds that Newcastle will decide who they want soon, as Eddie Howe also looks to improve the left-back department on Tyneside.

So far this season, the South American has made 13 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal while also providing one assist.

Why do Aston Villa want Nicolas Tagliafico?

In our view, it would be extremely harsh on Matt Targett to replace him with Tagliafico.

Admittedly, the Argentine is a player with 24 Champions League appearances to his name, and one of good pedigree.

However, Targett won the Players’ Player of the Year award for his efforts last season, which shows he is clearly respected by his fellow teammates.

Therefore, it would be risky of Gerrard to axe a dressing room favourite in order to bring Tagliafico to Villa Park.

Having said that, he may just be signed to provide competition, although it seems unlikely that Tagliafico would swap regular Champions League football to be Targett’s deputy.

Keep an eye on this saga, as there could soon be more developments.
