Speaking to Off The Ball, Mark Lawrenson has been discussing Caoimhin Kelleher and what he’s heard about the Irishman in Liverpool training.

The goalkeeper was once again the hero in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, making decisive saves against Leicester as the Reds progressed to the quarter-finals.

Lawrenson was full of praise for the goalkeeper after the game, claiming that he’s been told that he’s a really quick learner in training.

What’s been said about Kelleher?

Lawrenson had plenty of good things to say about the stopper.

“Yeah, it’s very important and every time he’s come in he’s done really well. He made a couple of really good saves during the game as well as the penalty saves. He’s definitely the number two now ahead of Adrian,” Lawrenson said.

“The other thing with Kelleher is, in training he’s always playing against world-class players, so that can only possibly bring him on. He seems a decent lad and I’m told he’s a really really quick learner, he’s happy to learn and hopefully he’ll go far.”

Challenger for Alisson

Kelleher’s brilliant work behind the scenes could see him eventually challenge Alisson for the number one spot at Anfield.

Of course, it would take somebody seriously special to knock the Brazilian off his perch, but if Kelleher continues to learn and progress, there’s every chance he could reach the required level.

At the age of just 23, Kelleher realistically has almost a decade of development ahead of him.

Liverpool are lucky to have such a talented number two.
