The highly anticipated Cricket movie ‘83’ has just premiered in theatres, but what date will the film release for online streaming and on what OTT platform?

When an upcoming movie releases its official trailer on YouTube, the easiest way to measure audience hype is by looking at the view count.

Well, for the upcoming sports biographical movie ‘83’, the hype is most certainly real…as in 12 million views in six hours and 75 million total views real!

The film has just launched in theatres, but what date will 83 release for streaming and which OTT platform has bagged the broadcasting rights.

What is 83 about?

The upcoming ‘83’ movie is a Hindi-language biographical sports film directed by veteran filmmaker Kabir Khan (Ek Tha Tiger, Phantom and Tubelight).

83, as most Cricket fans will instinctively recognise, is about the infamous victory for the Indian team in the 1983 World Cup.

The tournament was hosted that year in England, which saw the Indian team beat the West Indies, Zimbabwe, Australia and the host nation.

As explained in the trailer caption, crowds at the 1983 World Cup “witnessed one of the biggest underdog stories in the history of sports.”

“This victory put India on the map again and provided the platform to make India the greatest cricketing nation in the world today. Armed with self-belief and conviction, one man guided the team to a historic victory.” – 83, via YouTube.

83 finally starts its innings…

The highly anticipated upcoming ‘83’ sports movie premiered in theatres today, Friday, December 24th.

The movie was originally set to release in April 2020; however, like countless other cinema projects from around the world, had to be delayed because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The film would be subsequently scheduled and delayed multiple times, from Q1 of 2021 to this previous June and now to December 2021.

Thankfully, the first innings started on Christmas Eve with 83 launching with Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada dubbed languages available.

When will 83 release for online streaming?

At the time of writing, no major streaming platform has publicly confirmed the acquisition of the digital broadcasting rights for 83.

However, the popular and typically-reliable Twitter page LetsOTT Global has reported that the streaming rights have been purchased by both Netflix and Disney Plus Hotstar.

Whichever platform has purchased the international broadcasting rights, fans should expect 83 to premiere online between January 24th and February 14th.

This would be in accordance with the recent trend in the Indian cinema industry of only releasing titles for streaming four weeks after the theatrical debut.

This article will be updated as soon as the streaming platform and release date has been confirmed, so keep checking back in for the latest news on 83!
