Dave Jones has said on Sky Sports that VAR claimed they did not award Newcastle United a penalty yesterday as Joao Cancelo came away with the ball in an incident in the first-half.
No penalty awarded
Newcastle were harshly denied a spot kick after Ryan Fraser was taken out by Ederson in the City goal.
City did keep possession of the ball, as Cancelo ran away from the incident unscathed.
And VAR said that was the reason why Ederson was not deemed to have made a foul.
“It was checked by VAR. The best we got from them was that Cancelo comes away with the ball,” Jones said.
Jamie Redknapp was stunned by the communication from the officials, though.
He claimed that it showed a basic lack of understanding, and Newcastle should clearly have been given a penalty.
Redknapp perplexed
“That’s just an idea of not knowing what’s going on. That’s a terrible excuse. He just wipes him out. It’s a foul, it’s a penalty,” Redknapp said.
Now whether the decision would have affected the overall result is very much up for debate.

Newcastle were 2-0 down at the time, but if they could have converted the penalty they would at least have had hope.
In the end, it was a miserable day for Eddie Howe’s side.
City went on to win the match 4-0, which perhaps was slightly harsh on them.
The Magpies showed some signs of encouragement during the match, but were ultimately undone after some poor defending and clinical finishing from City.
