Newcastle United have reportedly hit a problem in their attempt to sign Kieran Trippier, with Atletico Madrid wanting a replacement right-back before allowing the defender to leave.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Diego Simeone will only sanction the sale of the 31-year-old if Atletico can sign a right-back first. Trippier only joined the La Liga giants two years ago from Spurs for a reported fee of £20m according to BBC Sport.
However, despite playing a key role in the club’s league title-winning season last campaign, Trippier looks eager to return to England, with Newcastle the favourites to sign the right-back.
Indeed, the former Spurs star would be a brilliant addition to Eddie Howe’s side, with Newcastle yet again losing by a big scoreline on the weekend as the Toon conceded four against Manchester City.
Whilst there Newcastle’s PIF owners will be able to afford Trippier in January, their immense wealth means nothing unless Atletico can sign a replacement for the former Burnley defender.
As well as a right-back, a centre-back and a central midfielder are likely to be on Newcastle’s shopping list in January. Newcastle remain in the thick of a relegation battle in the Premier League.
Newcastle will have to be patient if they are to win race for Trippier

With Manchester United also keen on Trippier as per Mundo Deportivo, the Toon face strong competition for the England international. However, patience in the race for the defence will be their strongest weapon to sign the defender.
Newcastle no doubt need the defensive and attacking qualities of Trippier. And with the Atletico now establishing their stance on the fullback, all the Magpies can do now is wait for the Spanish side to sign a replacement.
