Newcastle United are interested in signing Lucas Paqueta from Lyon in the January transfer window, according to Foot Mercato.

Newcastle United interest in Lyon’s Lucas Paqueta

The French news outlet has claimed that Newcastle have offered Paqueta a monthly salary of €850,000 (£725,828).

That equates to £181,457 per week.

Quite a lot of money.

However, according to Foot Mercato, Paqueta has turned down that offer.

Why?

Well, it’s because the 24-year-old is happy at Lyon, and if he is to leave, then he wants to join a more reputable club in Europe than the French team.

Sign of things to come?

Now, a player rejecting a club is not a big deal.

It happens all the time.

However, for Newcastle, Paqueta reportedly turning them down despite the huge salary on offer is a problem.

It shows that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) could struggle to attract quality players even with money.

After all, Newcastle are in the Premier League bottom three and could end up in the Championship at the end of the season.

Eden Hazard and Jesse Lingard are among the big names linked with Newcastle.

We think that Newcastle have to work extremely hard to bring those kind of players to St. James’ Park.
