Another Leeds United player is being linked with a transfer to Manchester United – and on this occasion, it isn’t midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
The Leeds sensation has found himself the subject of speculation about a switch to Old Trafford every now and again in recent years.
But this time around, the Red Devils are reportedly looking at another Elland Road player.
According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United scouted Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier in Tuesday’s 7-0 demolition at Manchester City.
The 21-year-old endured a horrific night at the Etihad Stadium but those at the Theatre of Dreams have reportedly earmarked him as one of the Premier League’s finest young stoppers nonetheless – and a long-term replacement for David de Gea.
Here’s how some of their supporters reacted to this speculation:
Realistic signing?
Well, there’s no denying that Leeds would absolutely hate to sell the French goalkeeper to Manchester United, given the rivalry between the two English outfits which dates back decades.
However, sooner or later, the Yorkshire side will have to offload Meslier.
Despite shipping seven to Pep Guardiola’s side on Tuesday, Meslier genuinely is probably the best young goalkeeper in the whole of English football.
And with Leeds seemingly battling relegation from the Premier League this season, the former Lorient gem is going to be seriously linked with a multitude of clubs if his current team aren’t doing the business.
Silver lining
On a massive positive note, the Whites stand to make an absolute fortune if someone like a Manchester United does come in for Meslier.
Remember, the Elland Road outfit picked him up for a bargain £5 million during the summer of 2020 and with five years left on his contract, Marcelo Bielsa, Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani hold all the cards.
There’s simply no denying that unless Meslier goes off the boil in a horrendous way, he may well be considered a great goalkeeper in years to come and although Leeds would hate to lose him – especially to Old Trafford – they’d be heavily compensated.
