Speaking on US TV station ESPN, Craig Burley has been discussing Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United after their humiliating loss against Manchester City.

Leeds were hammered by City this week. They lost 7-0 in what will surely go down as one of the worst performances in the Premier League this season.

Understandably, Burley and the rest of the ESPN panel were critical of Leeds, and Burley took aim at the manager.

What’s been said about Bielsa?

Burley gave his view on Leeds’ manager.

“The trouble is, Bielsa is a one trick pony, there’s no doubt about it. It was tighter at the weekend against Chelsea, but it shouldn’t have been, They’re cannon fodder for the bigger teams.,” Burley said.

“We know City are the team to beat at the moment, but if you think back to the opening day when United tore Leeds apart, I said, don’t judge United on this game. Bielsa didn’t learn his lesson and yet, he goes in here again with injuries to key players, People may applaud it, people who say they hate to see teams who shut up shop, but sometimes you have to do it, and he didn’t,” Burley said.

Sadly true

Leeds fans probably won’t agree, but Burley makes a good point about Bielsa.

The Argentine only knows one way to play football, and he simply refuses to deviate from his all guns blazing gung-ho style, even if there is some variation between a 3-3-1-3 and a 4-1-4-1.

Of course, that’s not always a bad thing, Bielsa’s Leeds took the Premier League by storm last season, but they seem to have seemingly been figured out this time around, and things need to change.

Bielsa may be a one of a kind manager, but there’s a reason he’s never won a major honour in his career, and that’s partially down to his inability to come up with a plan B.

Bielsa does only have one trick up his sleeve, and while that can be incredibly effective, there’s only so far it can take him and his teams.
