Ollie Watkins has told BBC Sport that Jacob Ramsey has ‘all the attributes’ to be a top Premier League player after the midfielder scored in Aston Villa’s 2-0 win at Norwich City.

The Villans travelled to face the Canaries and their former coach on Tuesday, just a month after firing Dean Smith. He took charge at Carrow Road only a week after leaving Villa Park and started brightly with one win and two draws, but they have now lost their last three.

Norwich have also not scored in three games after Aston Villa shut the Norfolk outfit out. Goals from Ramsey and Watkins also ensuring Norwich remain at the bottom of the table.

Ramsey broke the deadlock at Norwich with a superb solo goal from the Aston Villa talent. He collected the ball from Watkins on the halfway line and charged at the home defence, before lashing into the net at Tim Krul’s near post for his second goal of the season so far.

Watkins watched Ramsey’s run from the halfway line, as the Aston Villa product bypassed three Norwich men to score. And speaking after the game, the Villans striker shared he has little doubt the 20-year-old will enjoy a bright future.

“Jacob has all the attributes to become a top player,” Watkins said. “I got fouled on the halfway line, so I was just watching him do the rest. It was a tap-in at the end – I’ll take that every day of the week.”

Steven Gerrard gave Ramsey his 11th start over 15 Premier League appearances so far this season at Norwich. He has opened five of the former Rangers manager’s six games at the Aston Villa helm to date. The midfielder only failed to feature at home to Manchester City.

Ramsey also only failed to play in one of Norwich boss Smith’s 11 games in charge of Aston Villa this season. He additionally started six of his outings, and only missed out on August’s draw with Brentford due to Covid-related complications.
