Fans are losing hope for Vincenzo season 2 as reports that an international remake could be in the works spread online, but what do we know so far?
It has sure been a wild year for fans of Korean entertainment on Netflix, with the likes of Squid Game and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha becoming global success stories.
However, it was Vincenzo that started the 2021 ball rolling, airing its 20-episode first season from February to May.
This K-drama has particularly stood out amongst the year’s content, becoming one of the most popular Korean series on the entire Netflix platform.
Unfortunately, fans of the series are now losing hope that Vincenzo will return for season 2, but why?
Fans are losing hope for Vincenzo Season 2…
At the time of writing, Vincenzo has not been renewed for season 2 and unfortunately, Netflix’s hit Korean drama is unlikely to return for another trial.
The vast majority of Korean series that have more than 16 episodes are never intended to be renewed and if season 2 was on the cards, we would have likely heard about it already.
Speaking to Naver News, lead actor Song Joong Ki also revealed that “nothing has been said about season 2.”
“Nothing has been said about season 2. I’m personally happy that many people want season 2 to come out, but realistically speaking, it’s not coming out. And I don’t think there was ever any season 2 discussion going on internally.” – Song Joon Ki, via Naver News.
The pessimism has been emphasized recently, as reports that an international remake of Vincenzo is being talked about.
As revealed by Pinkvilla on December 13th, 2021, both Vincenzo and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha “are being asked about the remake rights abroad and related details are being discussed.”
As pointed out by users on Twitter, the selling of international rights for original titles typically means that any plans on future productions have officially concluded.
The only hope for fans is that Vincenzo will ultimately prove too popular not to be eventually renewed for season 2. The series is incredibly popular in Korea, with episode 20 being watched by over 14% of the national viewership!
The K-drama’s success was topped off by winning the Best Drama Series of the Year award at the 26th Asian Television Awards.
Interestingly, it appears that the cast of Vincenzo is open to a spin-off series. On May 2nd, Kwak Dong-Yeon (Chairman Jang Han-Seo) replied to a tweet from Netflix Korea, saying “Hope Netflix makes a spinoff.”
So, whilst a second season remains unlikely, there could easily be a spin-off Vincenzo series that deals with either the fallout or origins of some characters.
If renewed, what date could Vincenzo season 2 release?
As Vincenzo has not yet been officially renewed, a release date for season 2 remains unknown. However, we can make some predictions based on the schedule for the first season, if the series does get the surprise greenlight to continue production.
The series was announced in May 2020, with the first script reading taking place in August and premiering on Netflix in February 2021.
Assuming that season 2 would experience a similar production schedule of roughly 10 months, fans could see Vincenzo return as soon as Spring-2022.
However, with the lack of information concerning season 2 and the news that international rights are being discussed, fans should not be expecting the K-drama to return.
Is the last bastion of hope a spin-off? If the cast is still open to a new direction for Vincenzo, we expect the first information to be revealed next year.
This article will be updated as soon as more information on Vincenzo season 2 is revealed, so keep checking back in for the latest news.
