Patrik Schick has seen more twists and turns, more rises and falls than rollercoaster fanatic with an Alton Towers season pass.
Bursting onto the scene in Serie A with Sampdoria, Schick was then denied a dream move to Juventus due to a heart problem uncovered during his medical. (The Sun).
A club-record £35 million move to Roma then proved to be little more than an expensive disaster, paving the way for a restorative spell at RB Leipzig.
It’s fitting, then, that perhaps the finest week in Schick’s career threw up some rather contrasting emotions.
On December 4, the Czech Republic international became the first player in Bayer Leverkusen’s history to hit four goals in a single Bundesliga game during a remarkable second-half against Greuther Furth.
Eight days later, Schick took his tally to six goals in two matches. Well, six goals in 63 minutes of action, to be precise, spread across two Bundesliga matchdays.
But while Schick was basking in the glow of a 7-1 dismantling of a hapless Greuther Furth earlier this month, his first-half brace against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday preceded a collapse that no one saw coming.
From 2-0 up to 5-2 down, Leverkusen’s defensive deficiencies meant Schick’s rapid-fire brace counted for nothing.
He can take some consolation, however, in knowing that this is already the most prolific league season of his career.
In 12 starts, Schick has scored 14 times. Only Robert Lewandowski (who else?) has more.
Could West Ham return for Patrik Schick?
And with West Ham United in the market for a new striker, maybe now would be the right time for David Moyes to rattle through his contact book again.

“West Ham and I have exchanged the first love letters,” said Pavel Paska, Schick’s agent, in 2020.
“(Moyes) asked me about Patrik Schick.”
Daniel Kretinsky, West Ham’s new billionaire shareholder, is already planning to strike a partnership between the Premier League giants and Czech outfit Sparta Prague, if reports are to be believed.
But it Kretinsky wants to boost West Ham’s image back home – the Hammers are already pretty popular in Czech Republic after snapping up Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek – then stumping up the funds to land the country’s favourite son may be the way to go.
