Kim Kardashian has announced on Instagram she attempted the Baby Bar three times before passing. Fans of the influencer are now curious to know what the Baby Bar exam is in California.
Kim K was inspired by the case of Alice Marie Johnson, who was an elderly lady serving life in prison for a nonviolent drug conviction. Kardashian is known for her involvement in the law system, particularly prison reform and this is the next step to Kim K serving justice.
The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star has studied for more than two years to get to this moment. She explained how proud she feels for getting this far, saying: “Looking in the mirror, I am really proud of the woman looking back today in the reflection.”

What is the Baby Bar exam in California?
The California Baby Bar exam is also known as the First-Year Law Students’ Examination, as per the California State Bar website. First-year law students must pass the exam to be eligible to sit for the bar, the site reports.
Four US states offer an alternative way to pass the bar. For example, you can enrol on a “reading the law” programme or be an apprentice for a lawyer or judge. California, where Kardashian lives, is one of the states where these options are readily available. Kim began a four-year apprenticeship at a law firm in San Francisco in 2018.
The test happens on a single day and is completed remotely. It is administered by the State Bar of California twice a year, in June and October. This Baby Bar test is taken to complete the First-Year Law Students’ Exam and the applicant can’t progress to any form of law study until they pass it.
The Baby Bar involves multiple-choice questions and four essay questions covering criminal law, contracts and torts. Common torts include assault, battery, damage to personal property, conversion of personal property, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The Baby Bar is a seven-hour test consisting of four hour-long essays and three hours to complete 100 multiple-choice questions.
Kim K passes Baby Bar on fourth attempt
The 41-year-old was going to take her latest exam in 2022 but decided to take it early. Kim never went to college but, with the help of mentors Jessica Jackson and Erin Haney, she has finally passed. Kim was introduced to her teachers by CNN commentator Van Jones.
In her Instagram, Kim thanked Jones, Jackson, Haney and Bar Bri Law School bar prep for helping her achieve her dreams. Kim also gave insight into the rigorous work timetable she persevered with, which involved ten-hour days, daily four-hour Zoom calls, and in-person practice tests.

Kardashian’s father, Robert Kardashian, was a famous Los Angeles lawyer who represented OJ Simpson in his 1995 trial in which the actor and former football star was found not guilty of killing his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. Kim honoured her father in her Baby Bar announcement stating:
“I know my dad would be so proud and he would actually be so shocked to know this is my path now but he would have been my best study partner. I am told he was notorious for making fun of people who didn’t pass on their first attempt like he did, but he would have been my biggest cheerleader!”
If you tuned in to the final season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, you’ll know there was an episode in which Kim found out she had failed the Baby Bar exam.
In the episode, Kardashian explained she was taking a four-year programme instead of the typical three-year version and, after year one, she had to take the Baby Bar. On her first attempt, she needed a score of 560 to pass but scored 474. On her third try, she explained she had coronavirus and a temperature of 104, but made no excuses.
But perseverance has paid off and Kim is one step closer to becoming an attorney, saying it feels “soooooo good”.
