Newcastle United’s search for a new defender could now take them to Everton after a surprise link with Yerry Mina emerged.

Jeunes Footeux in France report that Newcastle are battling AC Milan for the signature of Mina.

Everton would allegedly consider selling Mina for around €20million (£17million) during the January transfer window.

Mina is approaching the final 18 months of his £120,000-a-week contract and Everton may simply cash in now.

Now 27, Mina’s value may not increase all that much in the coming years and a Newcastle offer could be appealing to Everton.

Whether Mina would pick Newcastle’s project – rich in finances but not in wins – remains to be seen.

Mina’s injury problems at Everton have to concern Newcastle

Mina, formerly of Barcelona, is a huge presence. Newcastle could certainly do with a commanding figure like 6ft 5in Mina.

There is a big problem with Mina though, and that’s his injury record.

Since joining Everton in 2018, Mina has only managed 64 league starts. This season, Mina picked up a hamstring injury in October.

The Colombia international returned against Arsenal last week but lasted just over half an hour. This time, Mina is out with a calf injury.

It seems that Mina just can’t avoid these niggling muscle injuries. If Newcastle want to spend big on a dependable defender in January, you have to question whether Mina is really that player.

The source in question isn’t a top-tier one either, so we would be surprised to see Mina in black and white stripes come January.
