Tottenham fans offered a mixed response to James Maddison’s performance for Leicester City against Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Foxes beat Newcastle 4-0 at the King Power, with Maddison getting on the scoresheet and winning a first-half penalty for the Midlands side – added with his assist for Youri Tielemans’ second goal of the game.
Whilst Spurs fans praised his ‘unreal’ performance in the middle of the park, there were others who didn’t like his apparent dive to win the penalty.
Following a challenge from Jamal Lascelles, the Leicester playmaker seemed to go over in a theatrical manner, even though there was contact from the Newcastle defender.
But it needs to be remembered that it is a contact sport, so it shouldn’t always equate to a foul, free-kick or a penalty.
Spurs, who have had their recent games postponed because of a COVID outbreak at the club, are back in training and hoping to face Brendan Rodgers side on Thursday.
It has been an indifferent season for Maddison, but Spurs supporters think he has found some serious form ahead of their clash.
Antonio Conte will be hoping that Leicester’s other indifferent side showcases itself on Thursday because of the lack of training they have had recently.
Nobody will blame the Spurs team if they are a little undercooked because, aside from training, they were last out on the field on the 5th of December when they beat Norwich City.
That will end up being 11 days since their last competitive match, but they will have plenty of matches, during these coming weeks, to get their fitness back in their tank.
Plus, Conte is now their coach, so they will probably find that sharpness a lot quicker.
Nonetheless, here is a selection of Spurs fans reacting to Maddison’s performance and apparent dive against Newcastle yesterday:
