Tottenham Hotspur supporters have taken to Twitter to celebrate Rennes’ result this afternoon.
Three days after flying to North London to face Tottenham in a postponed Europa Conference League clash, the Ligue 1 side lost 2-1 at home to Nice.
UEFA called off the contest after Spurs revealed that they had suffered a coronavirus outbreak at Hotspur Way, among players, Under-23 personnel and coaching staff.
However, the French outfit were furious with the Lilywhites, having already flown to England for the game.
UEFA confirmed on Saturday that the game would not be rescheduled after Rennes made it clear that they would not accept that solution.
Here’s how Tottenham supporters reacted to the fact that they lost this afternoon:
Forfeit?
Europa Conference League regulations indicate that seen as Tottenham were unable to play, Rennes would be awarded a 3-0 victory automatically.
But this suggest a resolution would have detrimental effects on Antonio Conte’s side, who needed a victory to progress into the latter stage of the competition.
It remains to be seen what will happen but, really, elimination wouldn’t be the end of the world for Tottenham.
Competing in Europe’s third competition is a distraction and their priority this season is to qualify for the Champions League.
And maybe, just maybe, a lack of European football in the second half of the campaign will allow Conte to focus on getting into the top four in the Premier League.
